...until you've listened to the original Broadway cast version.The "Grease" franchise stemming from the 1970s Broadway musical has been extended into movies (and the 1978 movie version with John Travolta and Olivia Newton John showcases their early talents) and many stage revivals. Each is poppy, singable and entertaining enough.But start here:the original Broadway cast version is slightly edgier, and I believe takes you closer to the true spirit of Grease. This is especially true of contemporary revivals of Grease, which have bowdlerized the lyrics of "Greased Lightning" in a way that removes much of its original non-PC charm. In this version, there is no escaping the fact that a song about a car is much more than a song about a car.Great fun, and evocative of both it's 1950s roots and the 1970s distillation of young adulthood.
